Contract for scope-study on a possible financial mechanism for a global agreement on marine litter

Short description

Marine waste is recognized as one of the world's growing environmental challenges.
In 2017, the 3rd session of the Assembly agreed to the long-term elimination of all discharge of litter and microplastics to the ocean and established an intersessional Ad Hoc Open-Ended Expert Group on Marine Litter and Microplastics to consider, inter alia, a stronger governance response at the global level.

The consultant will be asked to develop a report looking into the possible mechanisms for financing, and enabling activities in developing countries and economies in transition. Additionally, the report should explore possible modalities for enabling economic and other fiscal measures, which could be adopted by local and national governments to finance plastic-waste management.
