E6 through downtown Skibotn appears today as a challenge for traffic safety and the local community. There is some high speed despite the signed speed limit of 50 km/hour in downtown and 70 km/hour outside, it lacks a complete continuous walking path network and at times feels unsafe to cross the road for vulnerable road users. In addition the school is close to the main thoroughfare, and there are many intersections and exits on the route that should be placed together. The goal with establishing measures along the road is to improve the conditions for pedestrians and cyclists and for all who live and have their work in close proximity to the E6.
The project consists of concrete construction of over 600 metres of path and cycleway, five public transport stops, tightening and removing of crossings of the E6, establish a new complete road lighting system on a stretch of approximately 2 800 m, downtown initiatives with the establishment of municipal roads and parking, lowering of speed limits on parts of the stretch and establishing two elevated pathways. In addition, Storfjord kommune will rehabilitate the drainage network which will lie in the path and cycleway.
