Short description

The adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have significantly changed the global picture in which the international environmental governance system occurs. In the 2030 Agenda, the environmental aspects are embedded in sustainable development and linked with the social and economic aspects in an integrated manner. More than half of the SDGs and their targets address environmental concerns (89 out of 169 targets). Providing such strong commitments to the environment, the sustainable development agenda calls for further analysis on how the environmental dimension of sustainable development could be strengthened to ensure successful achievement of the SDGs.

Due to the changing global landscape an assessment of the achievements to date in the implementation of IEG reform and related initiatives would be critical before governments can commit to further development of a comprehensive and efficient global governance. The objective of the project is to build on the previous and current international initiatives and conduct an analytical study of progress on the implementation of paragraphs 88 and 89 of the Rio+20 declaration. The progress of the IEG reform should be evaluated in the light of recent developments in the global policies.
