Miljødirektoratet 999 601 391 PB 5672 Sluppen Trondheim 7485 Anders Braa +47 73580500 Anders.Braa@miljodir.no www.miljodir.no Project bear predation on reindeer calves in Trøndelag. 2017/12603 The aim of the study is to obtain more knowledge on bears' predation rate of reindeer calves and bears' habitat use in the reindeer calving period in Trøndelag, through field studies and comparable studies from previous projects in Norrbotten in Sweden. The study shall highlight how the predation rate on reindeer calves depends on density and habitat. The reindeers' use of habitat, calving period, period of calf losses and any reasons for calf losses shall be examined in the same areas, so that both the use of habitat in bears and reindeer, as well as the predation rate in bears and the losses of reindeer calves can be compared. 19500000.00 Trøndelag. The project requires that a minimum of 5 bears are caught per annum and equipped with VHF implants and GPS satellite collars equipped with video camera and ‘drop-off’ function for intensive monitoring of behaviour in the calving period for reindeer and the localisation of year-round living areas and dens. There is an equivalent plan to monitor tame reindeer by GPS technology in accordance with an agreement with reindeer owners in Trøndelag. The original bear collars and reindeer collars that were used in the previous study in Norrbotten will be used for trials in the field to calculate the density of reindeer where bears have been and in an analysis of whether the kill rate varies with reindeer density. The aim is to find individual kill rates for bears in Trøndelag of reindeer in the calving period, how the kill rate varies with reindeer density and habitat and to compare with the kill rate in the Norrbotten study. The contract can be extended for one year at a time for a further 5 years after the contract period, 1 year (1+1+1+1+1+1). The maximum contract period is 6 years. The estimated contract value includes any option years. The Norwegian Environment Agency considers that this contract comes under the exception for R&D services in the public procurement regulations § 2-5. Furthermore, the Norwegian Environment Agency considers that there are no other qualified suppliers than the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) who can meet the requirements set in this project. The reason is that there are no other actors outside the Scandinavian bear project who have the competence to mark and follow-up marked bears in Norway on the scale and with the technology and experience that is required for this assignment. The Scandinavian bear project is operated by NINA. The study uses data, experience and is analysed in the light of the previous Swedish study on predation rates in Norrbotten. This project was also carried out under the direction of the Scandinavian bear project. Before the trial can start, permission must be obtained from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, in accordance with the regulations on animals used for experiments. One of the set requirements is that the company/organisation who carries out the trial has sufficient competence to handle animals as required in the project description. 2017-11-28 Norsk institutt for naturforskning Trondheim 19500000.00 Mijødirektoratet Trondheim 2017-11-30
