The Ministry of Climate and the Environment (KLD) has given the Norwegian Environment Agency the task of mapping reservoirs for antibiotic resistance in Norwegian nature. The development of resistance against antibiotics is a fast growing problem in the world. A mapping shall be carried out on the occurrence of bacteria that are resistant to relevant clinical antibiotics in wild species in Norway. The survey shall cover wild species in terrestrial and aquatic environments. Samples shall be obtained form areas with a high level of human activity, but we would also like samples to be obtained from areas with a low level of human activity. Any occurrence of antibiotic resistance shall be assessed against any known exposure to antibiotics and heavy metals, such as copper, zinc and cadmium.
